New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
An unmanned village footpath crossing the busy Cambridge to London King's Cross line on the borders of Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, about 4 miles north of the market town of Royston and ten miles south of the attractive university city of Cambridge.
Railway type and traffic
Frequent passenger services (around 6-8 an hour) using emu 317, 321 and 365 classes) plus irregular freight and occasional steam and diesel excursions. An important King's Lynn / Cambridge to King's Cross link.
Environment
This is a short footpath through arable land linking two parts of Meldreth and is a well-used footpath. There is no lighting after dark when the path is very little used. The footpath connects Station Road with the end of Chiswick Lane and at that end follows the former course of the old line from Meldreth yard to cement works. At Chiswick End the track can still be seen in the roadway.
Road directions
From the A10 between Royston and Cambridge take the exit for 'Melbourn, Meldreth and Whaddon' and then turn right into Meldreth Village. Shortly after passing under the A10 road bridge there is the Fieldgate Nursery, you could park here, however it may be better to park in the side road off Station Road and walk under the A10. From the roadside the footpath to the crossing is sign posted.

Amenities
No public loos nearby except for the pubs etc. But this is a rural location. Fieldgates is a nursery shop so sells not only fruit and veg but general groceries. On site is a Butcher's shop.
Meldreth village has an Indian take-away at the station and further along the High St. there is a mini-supermarket with Post Office. Just beyond is the British Queen pub which serves food (and has a large car park). Melbourn has a fish & chip shop close to the Dolphin pub. The latter serves food from lunchtime through till about 21:00. Next to the Dolphin is a Post Office. There is a Co-op with pharmacy in Melbourn less than half a mile away. All facilities are within a mile.
Accommodation
Cambridge Motel on the A10 useful. Royston offers a couple of hotels but Cambridge has a huge range of accommodation and is linked by rail to Meldreth.

Photographic notes
Summer evening light may provide some silhouettes and the views across the line maybe better then. The road and passenger bridges at the station can be good but are difficult with their high sides. A decent video may be possible from those bridges.
